The Most Effective Way To Prevent Measles Is Through Immunization!

Posted by on 28 Jan, 2015

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads through the air through coughing and sneezing. The incubation period ranges from 5-21 days. Measles starts with a fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat, and is followed by a rash that spreads all over the body. About three out of 10 people who get measles will develop one or more complications, including pneumonia, ear infections, and/or diarrhea. Complications are more common in adults and young children.

Measles has been making headlines lately as it has been spreading like wildfire from Disneyland visitors. How is this disease spreading when it had been declared eliminated from the United States in 2000? Well, unfortunately measles is being spread by unvaccinated people who have contracted the disease from another country. So far 68 people have contracted this diseased in 2015 alone, mostly from visiting the amusement park, or from coming in contact with another infected person.

Measles can be prevented by getting yourself and your children vaccinated. The vaccine called “MMR” is given in 2 separate doses. If you’re not up to date with your vaccinations now is the time to take action, consult with your doctor to find out more about getting the MMR vaccine to protect yourself and your loved ones. Make sure that anyone who is at risk of getting the measles who hasn’t been fully vaccinated receives the measles vaccine as soon as possible. This includes anyone born after 1957 who hasn’t been vaccinated, as well as children older than 6 months.
