Ringworm Treatment

Ringworm is a fungal infection on the top skin layer, which mostly appears like a circular and red rash on the skin. Do note that that the condition doesn’t actually have any worm, but gets its name for the appearance. Ringworm is a highly contagious condition, which can spread by skin contact. Ringworm symptoms

In general, most patients see flat but scaly patch on the skin, which can be itchy. This/These patch/patches will increase and expand, appearing more like a circular ring resembling a worm. Some people often also see many rings appearing in circles, overlapping each other. You should check for the following symptoms –

  • Loss of hair (for scalp ringworm)
  • Itching and redness on the skin, more like worm shaped
  • Smaller blisters on the skin
  • Extensive itching

Tinea corporis is the most common kind of infection, but there can be other types of ringworm, including tinea pedis, also known as Athlete’s foot.

How to treat ringworm?

The treatment usually depends on the case. Usually, one can choose OTC medications like clotrimazole to deal with mild infections, but for advanced conditions, your doctor will give a prescription for treatment. Diagnosis is mostly done by taking a look at the skin, but in rare cases, you doctor may take skin scrapings for further and detailed investigation.

Should I see a doctor?

If you have skin rash for more than two weeks, you have to see a doctor. It is best to go to a doctor with initial rashes and patches, so that you can control infection. This is more important as the condition is contagious.
How to prevent ringworm?

The fungus causing ringworm is hard to avoid and is pretty common. If you know of someone who has ringworm, it is best to avoid skin contact, especially, with pets. Also, maintaining hygiene, both at home and personal levels, is a great way to avoid infections. Wearing thick clothes in humid weather can also lead to ringworms and must be avoided. It is also a good idea to avoid sharing personal items, especially clothing with anyone else, so as to avoid possible chances of catching the condition.
