The 2015-2016 flu season is here and it’s time to protect you and your family from this dangerous virus. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently released new updated recommendations advising parents to consider the flu vaccine a necessary vaccine for their children.
“Flu vaccine is the best way we have to protect children against this virus,” said Henry Bernstein, DO, MHCM, FAAP, author of the new policy statement. “The flu virus is unpredictable. We cannot always anticipate how severely it will affect different groups of people. Being immunized with the flu vaccine every year significantly reduces the risk of your child being hospitalized due to flu, and it protects other vulnerable members of your family and community.”
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP, an AAP spokesperson states, “Parents must consider flu vaccine an essential vaccine for their children. Now is the time to call your pediatrician and make an appointment, or find out when flu clinics start. Flu vaccine is a critically important, every-year vaccine that can protect your child from very serious illness and death due to a virus that is so often common in our communities, and so common in childhood.”
The flu season may start early in the fall or winter, have more than one disease peak and extend into late spring, so the AAP urges parents to seek the earliest opportunity to have their children immunized. To shield you and your family from this dangerous illness, Urgent Clinics Medical Care is now offering flu shots at our walk-in clinics in Pearland, Champions, The Woodlands and 3 locations in League City: Creekside, Marina Bay and Tuscan Lakes.
The flu shot for the 2015-2016 season provides protection against influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B. It is best to receive the vaccine by October each year before the flu season is in full swing. Early vaccination gives your body the chance to build-up immunity to the virus, providing you the greatest opportunity for defense.
Urgent Clinics Medical Care offers an inactivated influenza trivalent vaccine suitable for ages 4 and above. This flu shot contains non-infectious particles and cannot cause the flu. It is intended to provide protection against illness due to influenza, and does not protect against all respiratory illnesses.
Patients 4 to 8 years of age that have never received the flu shot will require two doses given one month apart. Patients 8 years of age and above should receive a single injection annually.
Walk-in today to any of our conveniently located clinics in the Houston area and protect yourself. The cost of the vaccine is $25. Or, you can make an appointment and we will come to you. On-site flu shots are $35 per person. Our friendly, experienced and licensed healthcare professionals are ready to help you guard against the severe effects of the flu virus.
