Minimize Risk and Injuries with a Sports Physical

Posted by on 31 Jul, 2015

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or part of a competitive team, participating in athletic activities promotes a healthy lifestyle and mindset. Before playing any sport, it’s important you have an understanding of your physical condition, be aware of any limitations and know if it’s safe to participate. In fact, most organized sporting programs require proof of good health and doctors suggest all athletic participants be aware of their ability and limitations before playing.

A pre-participation physical can accomplish that goal and determine a safe level of activity for an athlete. One type of a pre-participation physical examination is the sports physical. A sports physical identifies any condition that may affect your ability to play. There are two parts to a sports physical: your current health and your medical history.

During the physical evaluation to determine your current health, you can expect a healthcare provider to exam the following:

  • Height and weight
  • Heart (rate and rhythm)
  • Lungs
  • Vision
  • Abdomen
  • Ear, nose and throat
  • Reflexes, strength and flexibility

Some information you can expect to be evaluated during the medical history portion of a physical:

  • The history of illnesses among members of your family
  • Your current status of immunizations
  • Previous diseases you may have had or you currently have, such as diabetes, epilepsy, or asthma
  • Previous surgeries or hospitalizations
  • Allergies
  • Previous or current injuries which can include sprains, bone fractures or concussions
  • Prior history of physical difficulties during sports exercise
  • Any medications that you’re taking including herbal supplements, prescriptions, and over-the-counter medicines
