summer camp

The arrival of summer brings smiles and celebration for both the ending of the school year and also the beginning of summer vacation. Many children choose to broaden their life experiences by attending summer camp and taking advantage of opportunities to learn and explore new things. When approached safely, these adventures build character, confidence and a sense of independence.

Connected with these life-changing benefits of camp, however, are certain dangers. Parents should be aware of the risk of injury and take precautionary measures to ensure a safe experience for their children. Most summer camps require a physical examination prior to allowing participation in any activity, yet even if not required, parents can gain peace of mind by planning one for their child. This examination is known as a pre-participation physical examination or PPE.

The appropriate pre-participation physical examination for a potential camper is called a camp physical and it establishes the following:

  • Patient can participate in all camp activities without restriction
  • Patient can participate in camp activities but must have particular limitations due to a current health condition
  • Patient should not participate in camp

What Happens During a Camp Physical?

Camp physicals are similar to a regular check-up. The physical condition and well-being of a child is evaluated and documentation is provided to establish limitations or lack thereof. During the exam, a healthcare provider assesses any previous or current injuries or illnesses that could make it unsafe for a child to participate in various activities. Height and weight are measured, immunization history is reviewed and a physical evaluation is performed. More specifically, the doctor will perform the following:

  • Review a complete health-history in order to determine if previous or current medical problems present life-threatening dangers related to participation
  • Determine any medical issues which may require a treatment plan prior to, or during participation
  • Assess the need for future safety tools like a mouth guard, knee brace or helmet for activity participation
  • Ensure immunization records are up-to-date and provide suggestions for any required immunizations if not current

Our providers for Camp Physicals are professional medical practitioners who welcome and accommodate each and every child in a comforting environment. Camp Physicals will evaluate and promptly identify the level of activity at which a camper should be permitted to participate and provide the required paperwork for documentation. For added convenience, please bring your child’s camp activity form so that educational and safety tips can be shared that specifically address precautionary measures for your camper.
